Doors Open Windsor 2022

Doors Open Windsor is back! After four years of being away from the event landscape, 31 sites across our city will be open for free tours. Over two days, the public is invited to visit places and spaces which reflect the history, culture and architecture of our City. It’s an opportunity for both residents and visitors to learn and experience Windsor’s unique story.

From Sandwich Towne to Olde Walkerville, and all parts in between, Doors Open will feature places of worship, public buildings, a naval reserve, a 100 year old downtown building and more. Museums will be free of charge. It will be the last chance to see a water treatment plant no longer in use and scheduled for demolition. Visitors will learn about and see the transformation of two once derelict buildings into award winning spaces and see the on-going restoration of one of Canada’s historic treasures; Assumption Church.

Architectural technology students from St. Clair College will lead walking tours of historic neighbourhoods in Sandwich and Walkerville. Volunteers with the local chapter of Ontario Ancestors will be on hand at Windsor Grove Cemetery to answer questions about their work cleaning, photographing and transcribing monuments.

This year there will be some new features : architect Jason Grossi will tell the story of how he transformed the former Sandwich Fire Hall into a Library, visitors will see and hear all about the ambitious restoration project at Mackenzie Hall and Windsor’s Walt McCall will give an illustrated talk on the history of firefighting in Windsor.

Leading into the Doors Open weekend, there will be a virtual Scavenger Hunt where participants will be challenged to match photos of architectural features to historic Windsor buildings. There will be prizes!!

Free, fun and family friendly.
