Litter Cleanup Along Ganatchio Trail
April 13 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Second annual Litter Cleanup Along Ganatchio Trail Inspired by Anne Widholm
Two local social media organizations are once again inviting the community to come out and walk in the footsteps of Anne Widholm April 13 on Ganatchio Trail, and continue taking the little steps Widholm had, picking up litter on her daily walks.
An avid user of the Ganatchio Trail, 75-years-old at the time, Widholm was the victim of an unprovoked attack in 2017 during one of her walks while picking up litter. She remained in coma until her passing in Dec., 2018.
“We started this event through the City of Windsor’s Clean Sweep Initiative, with the support of ERCA and The City of Windsor last year, as a way to show her loved ones that her efforts did not go unnoticed or unappreciated.” Said organizer, Laurie Harrison, of Win in Windsor ~ YQG Synergy.
Nearly 200 community members came out as individuals and teams to walk in her footsteps and took nearly 200 bags of garbage out of the waters and off of the Ganatchio Trail between McHugh and Riverside Dr.
“This year our goal is to have 500 participants come out during Volunteer Week, just before Earth Day and remember Anne and her husband, give the trail a good spring cleaning before the annual tree planting and show that when we all take little steps as Anne had to keep our trial and water ways clean, the result is beautiful,” said Harrison.
Eric Bonnici from Eyes on Windsor has used the trail for years and was happy to get involved. “The trail is a nice escape from the city within the city, and the nature sightings are always fun. Unfortunately, litter does build up. It’s not too often that someone goes around picking up the litter outside of community events…Anne Widholm is one of the few that did. She’s truly an under-the-radar community champion.”
Anne’s son, Kristofer Widholm, spoke with Harrison prior to last year’s event and said that he was happy to hear about the event and knew that it would be important to her, “This is something she would have been at, participating in.”
Walking in Her Footsteps: Ganatchio Trail Cleanup Honouring Anne Widholm will take place on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Volunteers and organizers will meet in the Ganatchio Trail / Little River Road (Riverside Kiwanis Park) parking lot at 10 a.m. with clean up going until 1. Supplies and light refreshments will be provided.
Dates and times of events are subject change. Please contact organizers to confirm details.
