UWindsor to hold event in honour of National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

The University of Windsor’s Womxn’s Centre is hosting a vigil in honour of the 14 women who were killed in the 1989 L’Ecole Polytéchnique massacre.

On Friday, Dec. 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, representatives from the Womxn’s Centre and the university’s Women in Engineering (WiE) Club will gather at 11 a.m. for a rose ceremony at the Memorial of Hope on the University of Windsor campus located between Dillon Hall and Essex Hall.

Presentations will follow at noon in the Katzman Lounge in Vanier Hall. Speakers include Frankie Cachon, a UWindsor professor in the Women’s and Gender Studies Department; Anita Prskalo, a counselor at Hiatus House and survivor of abuse; and Priscilla Williams, a UWindsor engineering graduate.

“This event has always been an important one for the University of Windsor community,” said Micaela Nimmo, coordinator of the Womxn’s Centre. “By remembering the victims of this tragedy, and all those affected by gendered violence, we can continue bringing visibility to the abuse that many women face daily.”

Lori Dupont, a Windsor nurse who was murdered at Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital in 2005, will also be honoured during the ceremony.

In 1991, the Parliament of Canada created the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in response to the massacre of the women — most of whom were engineering students — at l’École Polytechnique de Montréal on Dec. 6.
