Ontario Launches Fortress North America Plan

Premier visited Washington to argue for increased co-operation across North America and for a stronger CUSMA trade agreement

Today, Premier Doug Ford is concluding a mission to Washington, D.C. after unveiling Ontario’s renewed plan for Building Fortress North America by reaching a fair free trade agreement that will create more jobs, lower costs and strengthen North American security. Over two days, Premier Ford is leading an Ontario delegation that is meeting with United States senators and members of Congress, as well as business executives from critical industries including the automotive, aerospace and agricultural sectors.

“Ontario is a vital partner in the continental trading relationships that benefit workers in Canada, the United States and Mexico,” said Premier Ford. “Our Fortress North America plan provides a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Canada, the United States and Mexico to build on this co-operation, secure North America, create jobs and deliver real results for workers and families.”

During the mission, Premier Ford highlighted how the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) has resulted in years of economic prosperity for the three signatory countries, and how it remains in the best interests of U.S. businesses and consumers to move forward together under a renewed trade deal that unlocks the full potential of Fortress North America.

By increasing collaboration through Fortress North America, Canada, the United States and Mexico can stimulate billions of dollars in new investment, create jobs, lower the cost of living for North American families and restrict the flow of unfair imports from overseas. Fortress North America will also strengthen national security across the continent by building secure and resilient supply chains for critical minerals, nuclear energy, defence production and advanced technologies.

“For generations, Canada, the United States and Mexico have worked together as trusted economic partners, supporting the growth of critical industries and integrated cross-border supply chains,” said Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “Ontario’s Fortress North America plan reflects our government’s continued commitment to strengthening this trilateral trade agreement and ensuring families on both sides of the border stand to benefit from the certainty and stability it offers.”

The Ontario government will continue to support a trilateral agreement that offers certainty and stability to investors, keeps shared North American prosperity moving, while at the same time making our continent the most economically competitive market in the world.

Quick Facts

Since CUSMA came into force in 2020, U.S. goods exports to Canada have increased by over 36 per cent.

In 2025 alone, over $1.2 trillion in goods and services moved between the U.S. and Canada, more than $3.3 billion per day.

In 2025, the province of Ontario ranked as the top export destination for merchandise trade for 11 U.S. states, and the second largest export destination for merchandise trade for 15 additional states.

The U.S. exports more goods to Canada than it does to China, the United Kingdom and Germany combined. Canada is also America’s largest export market for American-made vehicles, buying more annually than Mexico and all of South America combined.

U.S. exports of goods and services to Canada support 1.8 million American jobs.

NEWSFLASH June 2026 – SANS Institute, St. Clair College, siberX; WindsorEssex Community Foundation; Lois Fairley Nursing Award; AV Gauge & Automation

HALL OF FAME
Since 2008, the Windsor Essex Nurse of the Year has honoured one of the dedicated and compassionate nurses who make a meaningful difference every day in the lives of patients, families, colleagues, and the community. The Lois Fairley Nursing Award is presented annually by the Windsor-Essex Chapter of the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), based on nominations submitted by members of the public. The 2026 recipient is Spenser Dionne, a nurse in the Clinical Teaching Unit (CTU) at the Ouellette Campus of Windsor Regional Hospital. In the winning nomination, Ryan Pebbles (a patient’s son) wrote about how Dionne supported his family through a major crisis, offering exceptional personal care to his mother after a stroke. Dionne went far beyond her duties — she provided a sense of home, brought in items to help stimulate his mother’s recovery, visited on her days off, and stayed connected even after longterm care. He adds that she is also a trusted mentor to student nurses, including his sister, who has witnessed Dionne’s guidance firsthand. According to Pebbles: “She is not only healing patients today; she is shaping the nurses of tomorrow. By treating my mother as a person worthy of the highest devotion and fostering a supportive environment for students, Spenser has proven herself to be a leader in the Windsor Essex healthcare community.”

Presented each year during National Nursing Week in May by the Fairley family and the RNAO Windsor-Essex chapter, the award is named after Lois Fairley, a graduate of Grace Hospital’s nursing program in 1955. She spent her career serving patients at Grace Hospital in Windsor as a nurse and head nurse until retiring in 1993. Lois passed away in 2007. Get further details on the local RNAO chapter here at the website.

In mid-May 2026, AV Gauge & Automation of Oldcastle achieved Platinum Club status with Canada’s Best Managed Companies program by retaining its Best Managed designation for seven consecutive years or more. “We are incredibly thrilled to be named one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies for the 10th consecutive year,” states Tim Campeau, President of AV Gauge & Automation. “This milestone is a proud reflection of our team’s dedication, passion, and commitment to excellence, and it reinforces the trust our customers and partners place in us every day.” The 2026 cohort of Best Managed Companies shares common themes, including fostering a people-centric culture, implementing a strategic company framework, investing in innovation and technological advancement, and maintaining financial resilience and strong corporate governance. Together, these practices strengthen the Canadian economy by promoting sustainable growth, enhancing competitiveness, and cultivating a thriving business ecosystem.

THE RUNDOWN
SANS Institute, St. Clair College, and siberX recently announced a new partnership to launch NOW // AI, an executive education program focused on AI-driven cybersecurity risk and governance. Scheduled for October 2026 in Windsor Essex, the immersive program features SANS-led simulations, cyber-range exercises, and scenario-based training designed for leaders in finance, critical infrastructure, and the public sector. “This partnership represents a significant step forward inexecutive cybersecurity education,” says Mahdi Raza, CEO and Founder, siberX. “By combining SANS’ global expertise, St. Clair College’s regional leadership in applied learning, and siberX’s innovation in immersive experiences, we are creating a program that prepares leaders for the realities of AI-driven risk.” Participants will develop practical skills in AI risk management, incident response, andgovernance while earning a SANS — siberX credential. The initiative also supports regional innovation and strengthens the region’s role in cybersecurity and applied AI education. Michael Silvaggi, President of St. Clair College, adds: “This initiative reflects our commitment to delivering industry-relevant education that prepares professionals to lead in rapidly evolving digital environments, particularly in areas as critical as AI and cybersecurity.” Learn more online.

It’s time to make your voice count. The WindsorEssex Community Foundation (WECF) invites all residents to share their views on life in Windsor Essex by taking part in the Vital Signs Survey, open online until August 7, 2026. Your Voice. Your Community. This powerful theme reflects the purpose of Vital Signs — gathering local perspectives to help foster a stronger, more connected, and vibrant Windsor Essex. This year’s survey explores 11 key areas of quality of life, including housing, belonging, safety, mental wellness, and more. Every response helps build a clearer picture of community strengths and challenges, and directly informs local decision-makers, non-profits, businesses, and government on what matters most to residents. Since 2014, the local Vital Signs program has tracked local priorities and helped align resources to create lasting, positive change. “Vital Signs gives Windsor Essex residents a chance to speak up about what matters most,” expresses Lisa Kolody, Executive Director of the WECF. “Together, our voices shape how we grow, connect, and thrive as a community.”

THE PARENTING BIZ – Complete Care For The Family Dog Living In Windsor Essex: Training, Daycare, Boarding, & Grooming

The family pet is no longer confined to the backyard. On the contrary, our furry friends have become full-fledged members of the family, living their best lives with fuzzy blankets, memory-foam beds, temperature-controlled water bowls, and an endless supply of toys. As pet ownership has evolved, so has the need for thoughtful, structured care that fits busy schedules and acknowledges the role these animals hold in our everyday lives.

A well-trained dog can shift the whole feel of a home — calming the pace, strengthening routines, and teaching children responsibility and empathy.

Doggy Daycare now is part of this balance, giving parents the freedom to work, letting kids focus on school, and giving the dog a safe place to spend the day. And with summer vacation on the horizon, dependable boarding keeps that stability going even when the family’s away. This article highlights a few of the local experts who make it possible for your dog to have its own support team.

Families function better when everyone is looked after — fur babies included. And naturally, with a story about dogs, we couldn’t resist including as many cute photos as possible!

Animal Antics

With years of experience in canine behaviour and obedience training, Animal Antics has built a reputation for helping dogs and their owners communicate more effectively.

Bringing a pet into the home can come with challenges such as chewing, biting, door manners, separation anxiety, and socialization. Training is a key part of helping families navigate these behaviours, creating a
calmer, happier experience for everyone.

Since pets are part of the family, Animal Antics encourages children to be involved in the training process, helping them learn how to respectfully interact with animals and understand their boundaries. “We love to see kids learning how to give appropriate cues and directions to the family dog,” says Kelly French-Mitrevski, Animal Behaviourist and Owner. “We can also help teach children how to read dogs effectively, be respectful of their space, and train their own dogs to ensure a peaceful home environment.”

The Windsor location of Animal Antics has been open for 11 years and offers services including daycare for socialization and separation support, enrichment programs, grooming, group classes, private training,
and positive reinforcement training. The Lakeshore site — which opened on March 14, 2026 — features dog daycare and boarding.

French-Mitrevski holds a Master’s degree in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling, while Sharon Mack, Co-owner of the Lakeshore location, is a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT).

The Windsor-based Behaviour Centre employs 10 staff members, and the Lakeshore location has a team of six made up of both full and part-time employees.

Many staff members have years of experience working in dog daycare environments, and the head dog trainer is a certified canine behaviour specialist who instructs staff on reading dog body language, handling inappropriate play, and recognizing when to give breaks. All staff are certified in Canine First Aid and CPR. For daycare or training, dogs must be vaccinated, and their online booking system even sends reminders to clients when vaccines are due!

Regarding daycare, staff then start with short, controlled introductory sessions where new dogs come in for just one hour, and selected daycare dogs are introduced in a safe, comfortable environment.
