Soon after this article was published, LDSS EcoTeam President Carlos Pena Vallecillo was awarded a $70,000 TD Scholarship, primarily for his role as an environmental advocate in his school and community.

After a harmful algae bloom on Lake Erie caused beach closures and unsafe drinking water, Carlos led his school’s EcoTeam in a community campaign to raise awareness and work with scientists, politicians and citizens to find solutions. Carlos has lobbied Town Council to protect residents’ environmental health and he speaks at conferences and rallies to urge others to become environmental advocates. Active as Deputy Prime Minister of Student Parliament, and as a School Board Student Trustee, Carlos drew upon his background as an immigrant from Honduras to develop an ambassador program to assist new Canadian students. Carlos will attend the University of Ottawa and study political science with a minor in biology.

As a student trustee with the Greater Essex County District School Board, Carlos successfully implemented a Board-level ban on plastic water bottles. Carlos was a keynote speaker at Windsor’s Global Climate March and launched a social media campaign to encourage Prime Minister Trudeau to take strong action at the UN’s Climate Conference in Paris. In September, Carlos is enrolled at the University of Ottawa in the Political Science program (French Immersion) with a minor in Science.

In the Windsor Essex County region, social media exploded with negativity to the initial news with threats of boycotting these grocery chains. The news that Loblaws would no longer carry French’s Ketchup hit this region particularly hard since it is Essex County grown tomatoes processed at Leamington’s Highbury Canco plant that is providing the paste for this product.

Highbury Canco is the company that reopened the Heinz Plant that had closed its doors in June 2014, putting a workforce of nearly 740 workers out of work. Highbury Canco has a current workforce of over 400 and has hopes of continued growth.

Biz X contacted Catherine Thomas, Director of External Communications with Loblaw Limited about the reversal of this decision. Here is the official release from the company:

“We’ve heard our Loblaws customers. We will re-stock French’s ketchup and hope that the enthusiasm we are seeing in the media and on social media translates into sales of the product. We will work with French’s to make sure we are in-stock as soon as possible.

For context on our initial decision, our job as a retailer is to stock the products customers want most. Despite the recent media and social media attention, French’s regular ketchup did not sell well in our stores for more than a year.

In that time, we consistently met with French’s to review performance. We notified them of our final decision more than a month ago. At the same time, we had continued to stock French’s new innovation, flavoured ketchup also made from Leamington tomatoes, and dozens of other French’s product, in many of our stores nationwide.

Loblaw has a Canadian-first sourcing policy and is committed to supporting Canadian farmers and Canadian businesses. We are the largest purchaser of locally grown produce in the country.”- Kevin Groh, Vice President, Corporate Affairs & Communication, Loblaw Ltd.

The petition reads:
“Therefore be it resolved that the Speaker direct the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, as part of its Procurement Policy direct Dana Hospitality to exclusively serve Leamington Ketchup by French’s.”

“This is an opportunity for Queen’s Park to demonstrate leadership and support local production and industry through our procurement policy. I am asking everyone to sign the paper version of this petition which will be located through Windsor Essex County and at my Constituency office as well as on my website under the Petitions tab. I will be tabling this petition beginning next week and hope to add many signatures from across Ontario” said Natyshak.

Mr. Natyshak is currently touring Southwestern Ontario as part of his economic development tour and is the Ontario NDP critic for Economic Development, Trade and Infrastructure and Employment. He is in Leamington this afternoon meeting with greenhouse vegetable growers.
