Windsor Police Service Dog Assists In Stolen Vehicle Arrest

On Monday January 8, 2018 at approximately 6:15 am the driver of a red Ford F-150 pickup truck parked their vehicle in a parking lot located in the 3900 block of Dougall Avenue. The driver left the keys in the ignition and engine running as they entered a business.

The driver exited the business moments later to see the truck being driven away. The driver contacted police and reported the vehicle as stolen.

At 4:00 pm the complainant contacted police again as they had located the stolen vehicle parked in the 1300 block of University Avenue West. The complainant had also witnessed a male in possession of some property believed to have been from the stolen vehicle.

Patrol officers arrived and observed from a distance the same male exit a residence, throw an item onto a rooftop, and then flee out of sight on foot.

Officers established a perimeter and utilized the assistance of the Police Dog Unit. Police Service Dog FUSE and his handler were able to locate a suspect male hiding in a nearby yard. The suspect was arrested without incident.

Patrol officers located the item thrown by the suspect onto a roof, and confirmed it was property from the stolen vehicle.

Kristopher Middleton, a 31 year old male from Windsor, is charged with:

Possession of stolen property valued over $5000
Possession of stolen property valued under $5000

The Windsor Police Service would like to remind the community of the importance of removing ignition keys from any unattended vehicle. Stolen vehicles are a danger to everyone—LOCK IT OR LOSE IT !

WINDSOR POLICE INVESTIGATE ASSAULT

WINDSOR POLICE INVESTIGATE ASSAULT AT RESIDENCE

On Wednesday July 19, 2017 at approximately 8:00am, patrol officers attended a residence located in the 100 block of Erie Street West for a report of a loud argument.

Investigation revealed that a male responded to a knock at the door and observed two male suspects on the front porch. Both suspects allegedly assaulted the male with weapons and quickly left the area. The male victim sustained minor injuries as a result of the incident.

Investigators do not believe this is random act and they continue to investigate.

Suspects were described as:

1) Male, white, tall, thin build, short red hair. Last seen wearing jeans, black t-shirt and a black baseball hat.

2) Male, white, short, heavy build, shaved head, wearing a white long sleeved shirt with a blue jersey over top.

Police Seek Driver and Witnesses in Child Struck Investigation

On Saturday June 24th, 2017 at approximately 2:00 pm an adult female was walking with her 2 year old son at the intersection of Wyandotte Street and Ouellette Avenue. The pair were walking westbound on the north side of Wyandotte Street, preparing to cross Ouellette Avenue.

As they entered the intersection, a car that had been westbound in the curb lane of Wyandotte Street slowly turned right to go northbound on Ouellette Avenue.

The mother reports that at this time her young son tripped, his head struck the passenger side door of the passing car, and his arms were run over by the vehicle.

The involved vehicle stopped, and the driver exited and approached the scene.

Several witness helped the young child who was crying. The mother reports that witnesses gave the child some candy, the child appeared to calm, and the mother believed the child was fine. She reports that once the involved driver saw that the child appeared fine, he got back into his vehicle and left the scene.

The mother believed the child was fine, and decided not to contact authorities.

Approximately two hours later the child appeared unusually sleepy, and the mother began walking to a local hospital. While walking to hospital, she encountered a patrol officer and reported the incident.

The child was taken to hospital and diagnosed with a mild concussion. He has since been released and is recovering well.

Investigators would like to speak to any witnesses, as well as the involved driver.

The involved vehicle is described as being silver in colour, possibly a neon.

The driver is described as being an older looking heavy set male with grey hair. His front passenger is described as being an older looking heavy set female with brown hair.

WPS Advise Public to be Mindful of Securing Residences

Windsor Police Advising Public to be Mindful of Securing Residences

During the month of June our city has been able to experience some beautiful seasonal weather.

Many people take advantage and enjoy the temperatures by keeping their residence windows open.

Investigators in Windsor Police Services Property Crime Branch have noted that in the month of June there have been a number of break and enters reported where investigation revealed that the suspect(s) gained entry to the residence via an open window, with only a screen acting as a barrier.

The Windsor Police Service is by no means suggesting that our community not enjoy the summer weather. We are however suggesting to be mindful as to the location and times that a residence window is left open. This is known as “target hardening” to reduce the risk of theft — essentially not inviting a would-be thief. Windows should offer light, ventilation, and visibility…not easy access.

Suggestions include not keeping ground floor windows open overnight, or when no one is home. Residents are further encouraged to keep an eye out in their neighbourhood, and report any suspicious activity to police.

A second and related reminder is to lock doors to both your vehicles and your residence. Many homeowners have an automatic garage door opener in their vehicle. Investigators have had a few cases this month where a suspect entered an unlocked vehicle, utilized the garage door opener, and then entered the residence via the unlocked pedestrian door leading into the residence.

As Benjamin Franklin once said: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”.

Dedication of the Sr. Cst. John Atkinson Memorial Tunnel

Dedication of the Sr. Cst. John Atkinson Memorial Tunnel

Concluding the week long Windsor Police Services’ 150th birthday celebrations, the Windsor Polices Services Board, in cooperation with the City of Windsor and the Town of LaSalle, dedicated The Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway tunnel located near the entrance to St. Clair College South Campus as the Sr. Cst. John Atkinson Memorial Tunnel.

The dedication took place before a capacity crowd on Friday, May 5 at 11 a.m. in the St. Clair College Student Life Centre inside of St. Clair College. It was attended by local and neighbouring police forces, including honour guards from the RCMP, Windsor Police, CBSA and other law enforcement organizations.

Mayor Drew Dilkens and former Mayor, Eddie Francis were in attendance, along with MPPs Natyshak and Gretzky, MPs Ramsey and Hardcastle. They were joined by representatives of Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation.

Senior Constable John Atkinson was tragically murdered while on duty on May 5, 2006. Atkinson, 37, was the first and only officer to be murdered on duty in the history of the Windsor Police Service. Each year, the Windsor Police Service marks the anniversary with a ceremony at their Headquarters.

The preamble to The Highway Memorials for Fallen Police Officers Act 2002, S.O. 2002, c. 26 reads as follows:

We must never forget the contribution of those men and women to whom we owe so much. As a gesture of our respect, we seek to honour them by permitting the Legislature to name highway bridges and other structures in their memory.

“On May 5, 2006, the City of Windsor lost a true hero. John Atkinson was a respected Windsor Police Constable, a devoted husband and loving father and son, who lost his life protecting his community,” says Mayor Drew Dilkens. “Sr. Cst. John Atkinson Memorial Tunnel will be a tangible and lasting reminder to honour John’s memory.”

This recognition is the latest in many Windsor area dedications to Atkinson over the years. “We continue to be overwhelmed by the ongoing support by this community for our family” says Shelley Atkinson, wife of the fallen constable. His children, Mitchell and Nicole, see these dedications “as such amazing reminders of our dad, and a great way to keep his memory alive.”
