211 Day Marked by Launch of a New Website Experience

211 Day on February 11 is celebrated across North America each year and offers an opportunity to raise awareness about Ontario’s go-to phone number (2-1-1) and website to connect individuals to health, community and social services. To mark this special day, Ontario 211 is launching a newly improved website at 211ontario.ca that uses modern search capabilities to help connect you to the information you’re looking for.  This new search functionality also allows community organizations to embed a 211 search box on their own website to make the process of finding local community, government and health services easier than ever.

In 2016, more than the half a million visitors came to this website, which is sure to increase this year with the new and improved site.

Ontario 211 has also released its 2016 caller statistics. The numbers show that more than 335,000 calls were answered by 211 across the province last year, and 25,000 of these calls were from Windsor and Essex County residents.

Those looking for legal supports and health services represented 51% of all calls to 211 last year in Ontario.

“Legal and health services were the top two reasons people called 211 Ontario in 2016,” said Karen Milligan, Executive Director, Ontario 211 Services. “Our health, social and government services are plentiful, but complex to navigate, and many Ontario residents find it difficult to know where to begin. We know from a Canadian Institute for Health Information study in 2015, that 27% of Canadian caregivers who needed help did not know where to find support. We raise awareness about 211 on February 11 to help people find the support they need and to reduce inappropriate calls to other channels, such as the 911 phone number.”

“In Windsor and Essex County, the top three reasons people called 211 in 2016 were for legal services, income assistance and health care, which is in line with what we are seeing across Ontario,” said Jennifer Tanner, Project Manager, 211 South West Ontario Region.

Residents should always call 9-1-1 for a life-threatening emergency, when a property is in danger or a crime is in progress that requires the police, fire or paramedic services.

Calling 2-1-1 is the easy way to access financial, emotional and other supports in Ontario communities this winter. Internet phone users can call 1-866-686-0045, and TTY users can call 1-888-340-1001.
