New Residency Program Announces Three Artist in Residence in Downtown Windsor including Beriault, Varga, Horne-Gaul
The Arts Council Windsor & Region (ACWR) has announced that three Ontario artists have been selected as part of the Neighbourhood Free Space – Self-Directed Residency Program: Alexandra Beriault (Toronto), Béla Varga (Windsor) and Laura Horne-Gaul (Kingsville)
ACWR is partnering with one ten park, Hackforge, and Left Contemporary to host two residencies in downtown Windsor.
“It is vital that we offer opportunities like residencies to artists who are from the region, as well as from other cities.” Says Jolie Inthavong, Board President at ACWR. “Tech is exploding and will continue to do so. In creating partnerships between the two types of spaces, we can highlight the cohesion between the different disciplines to show both professionals and the community at large that the arts can, literally, work in Windsor.”
Sarah Morris, Managing Director of Hackforge “Hackforge is proud to be part of the ACWR’s Free Space Residency and excited to welcome artists into their space.
Bringing art, technology, and community together is what our organization is all about.” “ACWR’s Free Space residency program gives working artists a professional development opportunity to help them move forward in their career,” says ACWR Director Julie Tucker. “The community will be able to speak to the artists at Hackforge on June 15th where we will be holding an Artist Talk.”
A schedule of programming is available below. Both receptions are free and open to the public. Snacks and refreshments will be available.
Alexandra Beriault holds a BFA in Sculpture and Installation from OCAD University, graduating as the recipient of the 2014 Sculpture/Installation Medal. Throughout Beriault’s work, she has developed a practice where the objects and circumstances she creates manifest as performative purgatorial experiences.
Béla Varga is a Canadian born Roma artist, and a recent BFA graduate from the University of Windsor. Through Varga’s artistic practice, he hopes to share the unknown stories of the Roma people and to integrate Romani cultural artifacts and knowledge into a contemporary context. Alex Beriault & Béla Varga’s reception @Left Contemporary, June 30, 2017 @ 7pm Location: Access from alley of Cataraqui Street between Moy and Gladstone
Laura Horne-Gaul was born in Peterborough, UK. She currently lives and works in Kingsville, ON.
