FROM THE PUBLISHER – Join Black Kids In Action To Celebrate Black History Month
Back in 2023 I learnt of a Windsor organization called Black Kids In Action (BKIA) Performing Art Group and included them in a feature story.
The timing was perfect as it was in the issue we recognize local businesses and organizations that support Black families in honour of Black History Month in February.
This year, you will read later in The Parenting Biz about two different organizations — the Windsor Essex Community Health Centre SAPACCY program and the Beauty is Me program (involved with the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society).
Since we want to be fair to all organizations, we choose to share our editorial space as much as possible. However, I was recently impressed by Marcia Pivotte, Community Outreach and Vice President of BKIA who contacted me during the holidays about sponsoring their upcoming event.
Of course the answer was: “Absolutely!”
Our sponsorship deal was negotiated quickly to meet tight timing, but this article is a surprise bonus to all at BKIA. I really wanted to promote their show as much as I could!
BKIA began in 2019 and its mission is to empower Black kids to achieve their full potential through education, mentorship and community engagement by creating initiatives that break barriers and give youth the opportunity to explore and thrive.
For 2025 the BKIA Black History Month Production is: Our Story, Our Journey.
“In a world where we are shaped by a legacy of resilience, struggle, and triumph in the face of systemic injustices, for centuries, Black individuals around the world have endured enslavement, colonization, segregation, and discrimination,” comments Oluwatosin Akinbinu, BKIA Executive Director. “Despite these challenges, Black people have made extraordinary contributions to every aspect of society — art, science, politics, sports, and more. Their culture and history are rich with stories of innovation, courage, and unwavering hope.”
Our Story, Our Journey is a dynamic and inspiring production celebrating Black history, culture, and resilience. Through a blend of drama, dance, music, and spoken word, this performance is a powerful story that highlights the struggles, triumphs, and enduring spirit of the Black community.
Akinbinu adds: “It serves as a reminder of the past, a celebration of the present, and a call to action for a united and equitable future. It is a heartfelt tribute to the legacy and ongoing contributions of the Black community.”
The production takes place on March 7, 2025 at the Capitol Theatre, 121 University Avenue West, downtown Windsor. Doors open at 6 p.m., show time is 7 p.m. Tickets are $40 and payments can be made via email at: [email protected] or through the website.
Plan to be there to celebrate the diverse stories and contributions of the Black community; support the empowerment of youth in arts and culture and be part of a meaningful, community experience.
Together, let’s honour the past, embrace the present, and inspire the future!
