Kids Creating for Change – For Peace Sake

Art Show Created by Youth to Raise Funds for Refugees. Youth-led art show looking for submissions

Entries are now being accepted for a youth art show and sale to raise funds for G5 Windsor. “Kids Creating for Change – For Peace Sake” will be held on Tuesday, August 30, at Water’s Edge Event Centre and will showcase amazing artwork created by Windsor and area youth.

The event was actually created by children. Max, whose mother Tina is a member of G5 Windsor, wanted to participate in the fundraising but all of the events had been geared towards adults. Max suggested the art show and other children eagerly joined him.

“I wanted to help sponsor a family. To bring them to Windsor to be safe. I love art. Most kids love art. It doesn’t cost a lot to make – all you need is paper and pencils, or other things if you want, and imagination. Every kid can do this, and help raise money,” says Max, a grade 6 student.

Ayesha Saleem Drouillard is one of the event organizers that helped the children turn their idea into a real event: “It’s a fun way for kids to make a difference while expressing their own creativity. It reinforces the message that there’s always something you can do to help other people and make the world a better place, no matter how old you are!”

Children up to 16 years old can submit any artwork that they like: drawings, paintings, sculptures. The artist is also asked to recommend a sale price and the pieces will then be sold with all funds going to G5 Windsor, a local group raising funds to sponsor a refugee family from Syria. The deadline for submissions is August 25.

“Kids Creating for Change – For Peace Sake” will be held on Tuesday, August 30, from 6pm to 9pm in the White Room at Water’s Edge Event Centre, 2879 Riverside Drive East, Windsor (parking and entrance off Drouillard Rd.). Admission to the family-friendly event is only $2 and includes the show, children’s activities, entertainment, and snacks. Bring a solid-coloured T-shirt for a fun craft activity. Art sales are cash only. Youth have until August 25 to drop off their donated artwork to City Cyclery (553 Lincoln Road) or Truthful Healings (1958 Wyandotte Street). Artwork should include the artist’s name, age, name of piece and price (under $30), phone number or email address.
