TECUMSEH LOCAL GOVERNMENT WEEK 2017

The Town of Tecumseh is proud to partner with the Province of Ontario, the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks, and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO), and the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) to develop Local Government Week, which celebrates the key role Ontario local governments play in helping to define the character, priorities, amenities and physical make-up of Ontario’s diverse communities.

Tecumseh Town Council has proclaimed the week of October 15 to 21, 2017, as Local Government Week in the Town of Tecumseh. The goal of Local Government Week is to put a face to local
government staff and elected officials, engage youth and create an interest in community leadership.

In celebration of Local Government Week, events and activities have been planned for local elementary and secondary school students to create awareness in local government and acknowledge its vital role and function. As in previous years, the Town will be offering Open Houses to local schools, which includes tours of the Town Hall, as well as the Tecumseh Fire and OPP Stations, enabling students to gain greater awareness of the operations.

A variety of contests aligned with the annual theme of Local Government Week, with emphasis on Canada 150, are also being held. Elementary school students have the opportunity to participate in poem and poster contests. The poem contest winner will have the opportunity to be “Mayor for a day”, and the runner-up will have the chance to be “Deputy Mayor for a day”. Secondary school students can participate in a Town of Tecumseh National Anthem theme video or an opinion editorial writing contest. Winners will have their submissions used as promotional material for select events in 2018. All contest winners will also receive a Tecumseh Prize Pack and a Certificate of Achievement!

Since the initiation of Local Government Week in 2008, the Town of Tecumseh has been an active participant in the annual event. This year, we hope to bring even more elementary and secondary school students together in order to engage with municipal leaders and elected officials, to learn about the inner workings of municipal government, and to learn how local decisions directly impact their community.
