Update on Windsor Flooding Support Services
With the long weekend approaching, the City of Windsor wants to ensure residents have access to all the information and support necessary to deal with any remaining needs caused by last week’s flooding.
To date, the 311 Call Centre has received 2489 reports of flooding, 478 of those were called in this week.
“The calls to 311 are slowing down and we know that means most residents are past the emergency stage and working hard on the recovery stage,” said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens. “We’re fortunate to have some great organizations supporting us in our efforts to support residents, and together we’ll get through this.”
Residents in need of support or assistance are encouraged to call 211 any time, day or night, or make use of the following services and information.
Disaster Recovery Assistance:
Provincial Minister of Municipal Affairs Bill Mauro was in Windsor and activated the Disaster Recovery Assistance for Ontarians program for Windsor, Tecumseh and Lakeshore. Applicants should contact 1-844-780-8925 with questions or if in need of help with completing their applications.
Donations/Volunteers:
Samaritan’s Purse is looking for volunteers and for residents in need. If you can help with donations, or time, or need help with removing/replacing flood damaged goods, please call 1-866-628-6565.
The Red Cross is happy to accept cash donations but it will go into their general disaster relief fund which helps offset the cost of disasters such as floods. The Red Cross is ready to assist clients by providing clean up kits if they wish to start the clean up process while they wait for their insurance companies or other agencies to assist.
East End Resident Support at WFCU Centre:
The WFCU centre located at 8787 McHugh Street is open between 8am and 8pm. East end residents without hot water are welcome to use the shower facilities at the centre for the remainder of this month. Please check in with the front desk staff prior to usage and be sure to bring towel and toiletries.
Special Garbage Pickup for Residents with Flood Damaged Materials:
The City of Windsor has arranged a special garbage pickup service to begin Friday, October 7, 2016, to assist Windsor residents living east of Walker Road who experienced flood damage from the extreme rainfall this past week. And should the sheer volume of the material exceed what crews can take away on Friday, further pick-up will follow Saturday and the following week if needed.
This special pick-up is for residents who do not have a paid contractor working on their properties, as paid contractors are responsible for taking any damaged materials to the landfill.
Special Pick-up Details:
- Flood damaged materials include; mattresses, appliances, rugs (cut and bundled in 4 foot lengths), furniture, and building materials( bundled, bagged or placed in pails). Nails must be removed from all wood and drywall. Appliances must have doors secured shut.
- Collection crews will not pick up loose material. All loose items must be placed at the curb in garbage bags weighing no more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds). Bags should not be stacked but rather placed side by side. The hard-sided garbage container by-law will be waived for this special collection only.
- Household chemical waste, paint cans, and other chemicals are not to be placed at the curb. Please visit the Household Chemical Waste Depot for proper disposal of those items.
- Electronics damaged by flood water can be placed curb side and will be collected in a separate collection from other flood damaged items
- Please have flood-damaged material at the curb (not in the alley) by 6:00 a.m. Friday morning, October 7th, 2016. Normal residential garbage pick-up continues in addition to pre-scheduled flood service pick-ups.
Residents living west of Walker road who experienced flooding this past week are asked to contact 311 to register for collection of flood items.
Flood Material Drop-off:
The City of Windsor is currently waiving costs for residents who are dropping off flood damaged materials at the Public Drop-off Depot on Central. But, there is a fee being charged to contractors who are dropping off items, as their costs are passed on to insurance. Homeowners are reminded that contractors paid through insurance should not leave damaged goods behind.
Depot Hours:
- Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Closed on Sundays and Thanksgiving Monday.
