Windsor Flood Update: Windsor Flood Declared Disaster by the Province, Samaritan’s Purse Coming to Help Cleanup

The Ministry of Municipal Affairs has declared Windsor’s flood a disaster and reports that applications for disaster assistance relief are available on the Ministry website.

Application forms will also be available at City of Windsor community centres and the City Hall reception desk in the coming days.

Family Services Windsor-Essex will be available to assist residents who require help filling out applications.  Once residents have the application form, they are requested to call 519-966-5010, or toll free 1-888-933-1831, during the day for assistance.

Samaritan’s Purse International Relief Canada is joining the relief effort in Windsor.

Samaritan’s Purse mobilizes specialized staff and equipment, as well as hundreds of volunteers, when natural disasters occur. Their focus is low-income residents, seniors, people with disabilities, and those who don’t know where else to turn.

In a news release today Samaritan’s Purse reports it is looking for both volunteers and residents in need.

Residents can also call 211, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to get more information on this and other community services available to those affected by the floods.

McGregor

Residents of the McGregor area who experienced property damage or loss as a result of the intense thunderstorms that hit the region on August 28 and 29 may be eligible to receive help through the Province of Ontario’s Disaster Recovery Assistance program.

The Town of Essex was notified late Thursday afternoon that the province has activated the Disaster Recovery Assistance program for specific flood-affected areas, including McGregor. Applicants must be within the activation areas (see map) to be eligible for assistance.

Information on the program, application materials, and the map of the eligible area within Essex are posted on the Ministry of Municipal Affairs website under Disaster Recovery Assistance.

Damage from sewer backup is not eligible under the program except under special provisions for low-income households.

Tecumseh

Areas of Tecumseh are also included in this status.
