Bigg Wiggle Presents Mayor Drew Dilkens with $10,500 Cheque in Support of Mayor’s Youth Leadership Team
The City of Windsor is proud to be the official host for the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) this December, welcoming for the first time in Canada the FINA Short Course Championships. The best swimmers from around the world will come together at the WFCU Centre to “Feel the Power” and push for the podium against many of the same competitors that they faced this past summer during the Olympic Games in Rio.
“We saw the excitement in Rio, and now we’re ready to host the excitement in Windsor,” said Mayor Drew Dilkens. “And what better way to showcase our great city than by showcasing our greatest asset – our people. The Mayor’s Youth Leadership Team is going to do us proud.”
This first-ever leadership program has inspired, educated and empowered youth leaders (15-24 years of age) from our community. The team of 45 students is dedicated and has been meeting bi-weekly for training sessions in hospitality and tourism, goal setting, volunteerism, and customer service. In preparation to participate on behalf of the Mayor and the City of Windsor, the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Team looks forward to welcoming visitors from around the world, beginning with the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m). From there, the team is eager to remain involved in supporting the many events lined up for Windsor’s 125th and Canada’s 150th birthday celebrations in 2017.
This youth leadership program has been supported by local band, Bigg Wiggle who have presented a cheque to Mayor Dilkens in the amount of $10,500. The band is no stranger to our community, participating in many charity events over the years and, in particular, hosting the annual Wigglefest for 8 years in a row. Over the years, the event has helped to raise over $40,000 in support of the 2009 Provincial Special Olympics, Family Respite, 2013 Windsor-Essex International Children’s Summer Games, 2014 Ontario Summer Games and the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m). “The band enjoys utilizing music to bring the community together,” said drummer, Mike Cooper. “We are grateful for the ongoing support of corporate partners and our audience who join us each and every year to help raise funds that support valuable programs like the Mayor’s Youth Leadership Team.”
