Arts Collective Theatre (ACT) is set to stage the iconic musical RENT at the Capitol Theatre this fall.

Opening on October 4, 2024, and running for two weekends. RENT is a musical set in New York City’s East Village during the late 1980s and early 1990s. It follows a group of young artists and friends struggling to make ends meet while dealing with personal challenges, including love, friendship, and living with HIV/AIDS.

At the center of the story are roommates Mark, a filmmaker, and Roger, a musician, who are trying to pursue their passions while facing financial hardships. Mark’s ex-girlfriend, Maureen, is now in a relationship with a lawyer named Joanne. Meanwhile, Roger meets Mimi, an energetic dancer, and the two fall in love despite their difficult pasts.

The characters also deal with the looming threat of eviction by their former friend and landlord, Benny, who is now a wealthy businessman. As the story unfolds, they learn to cope with their fears, losses, and illness, finding strength in each other and embracing the idea of living life fully despite the uncertainty of tomorrow.

“RENT continues to be relevant because it speaks to the struggles of marginalized voices,” says Chris Rabideau, ACT’s Artistic Director and RENT Director. “It’s about finding love and connection in a world that often overlooks or dismisses those on the fringes.”

RENT is a powerful exploration of real-life issues that affect people from all walks of life, making it relatable and thought-provoking for audiences of all ages.
