Discard the devices of modern living and take a turn to the past during the John R. Park Homestead’s special Time Travel Morning event, hosted on Friday, June 10 starting at 10am.
The Time Travel Morning event, which is planned for a school PD Day, is a great chance for your family to cast off their smart phones and return to a simpler way of life at the original 1840s pioneer homestead.
“From the very start, event participants will be launched back in time to the year 1842,” explained John R. Park Homestead Curator, Kris Ives. As soon as visitors arrive at the Homestead they will be whisked away to don their very own outfit of pioneer apparel. They’ll put their smart phones and other modern devices aside as they start the trek back in time.

The Time Travel Morning program, which is perfectly suited for adults and school-aged children, will feature a number of hands-on pioneer activities and experiences.
Participants will hear a bit of the history of the Park family who originally developed the farmstead; then, guests will move on to traditional spring farming tasks including harvesting fresh fruit and vegetables from the Homestead’s garden. Join the Homesteaders in drawing water from the well and enjoy making a delicious pioneer snack on the hearth.
When the chores are completed, it will be time to relax and enjoy traditional games and early settler entertainments before making a souvenir to take home. To round out the day, enjoy a tasty pioneer beverage, a culinary blast from the past for modern palettes.
“This immersive experience will shed light on what life was like in the era of the Park family,” Ives added. “Sometimes we get so caught up in our modern, fast-paced, high-tech lives that it’s a nice change of pace to disconnect for a while and take a step back in time.”
The event is $15 per participant and is pre-registration only. You can register for the event online but registration will be accepted until Wednesday, June 8.
The Homestead was named Ontario’s Best Living History Museum. Since 1973, the Essex Region Conservation Authority has served as a community-based organization dedicated to protecting, restoring and managing the natural resources of the Essex Region.
