Innovative Lung Cancer Research in Windsor Benefits from Concerts For A Cure Campaign

Lung cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada (excluding non-melanoma skin cancers) and is the leading cause of death for both men and women. This year an estimated 28,600 Canadians will be diagnosed with this disease, representing 14% of all new cases in 2017.

The Canadian Cancer Society provides the core funding for The Canadian Cancer Trials Group. Caesars Windsor Cares donation toward this clinical trial helps ensure worldwide standards of care for patients with cancer.

With support from Caesars Windsor Cares, the Canadian Cancer Society will be able to support research led by the Canadian Cancer Trials Group in Windsor to test a new therapy for advanced lung cancer. The trial will also evaluate whether varied treatment approaches impact the quality of life of patients and how this could lead to more tolerable and effective lung cancer treatments.

Today, more than 60% of people diagnosed with cancer will survive, compared to only 25% in the 1940s when the Canadian Cancer Society began funding research to prevent cancer. “The Canadian Cancer Society is grateful for Caesars Windsor and its commitment to fighting cancer,” said Cindy Vinall, Senior Manager, Community Offices, Canadian Cancer Society. “Through corporate philanthropy, cause-related campaigns, and employee gifts, Caesars Windsor has sustained important programs in Windsor-Essex with a 16 year total of $110,000.00.”

Every $1 invested in the Canadian Cancer Trials Group by the Canadian Cancer Society allows the Group to raise another $4. “These trials shape how people living with cancer or in remission, are treated; setting the bar for the safest, most effective cancer care in Canada and around the world,” said Dr. Kulkarni. Currently there are 15 open clinical trials in Windsor.

The Canadian Cancer Society is the second recipient announced of Caesars Windsor’s Concerts For A Cure campaign. “Caesars Windsor Cares is proud to support this local research which can impact patients in our community and across the country,” said Mary Riley, Vice-President Marketing, Caesars Windsor. “We are pleased to celebrate our fifth Concerts For A Cure campaign and provide funds directly to local organizations for a disease that impacts so many in our community.”

Since 2013, Concerts For A Cure has donated $1 from every October and November Colosseum ticket sale to local non-profit cancer-related organizations whose primary goal is to raise awareness or provide support to individuals undergoing treatment. The campaign has raised over $100,000 for Windsor Cancer Research Group, Canadian Cancer Society Windsor-Essex, Hospice of Windsor-Essex, Pajama Angels, Transition to Betterness and In Honour of the Ones We Love. In addition to this year’s donation, Caesars Windsor employee HEROs will join the team of volunteers sewing robes for the program.

The Concert for A Cure Series 2017 includes: Theresa Caputo (Nov 3), A Night with Janis Joplin (Nov 4), Styx (Nov 12), Mariah Carey (Nov 17) and Dustin Lynch (Nov 19).
