Canadian Arts Productions announces the production of its next film project ON THE MONEY.

The film ON THE MONEY will tell the story of Windsor singer, dancer, actor and author Leslie McCurdy, who has been traveling across North America for the past twenty years raising the profile of Harriet Tubman through her one woman show, The Spirit of Harriet Tubman.

McCurdy has also written and performed plays about other black women who fought for racial equality and society justice, including Viola Desmond. Now, both Tubman and Desmond have been chosen for great honours: Tubman, once enslaved, with be on the US twenty dollar bill as of 2020. Desmond, once convicted of fraud for sitting in a whites only section of a theatre in Nova Scotia, will be on the Canadian ten dollar bill in 2018.

“Who knew I would be so ‘on the money’ when I started these projects twenty years ago,” says McCurdy. The City of Windsor’s Arts Culture and Heritage Fund has awarded a generous grant for the film project, ON THE MONEY. The film’s producer, Pat Jeflyn, says “this support for our project is fantastic. It allows us to kickstart the production and commission the composition and performance of original music by local musicians for the film.

Of course, there’s still a long way to go to raise all the money we need for the film, but this grant is vital in making it happen. I am very grateful to the city of Windsor’s ACHF for this contribution.” ON THE MONEY will be directed by Kim Kristy. Filming is set to start this summer.
