Many young adults take a keen interest in conveying their feelings through a non-aggressive form of self expression. I take an interest in writing spoken word poetry.

The powerful world of words gravitates towards those who express themselves further than the eye can see.

Self-expression is a display of individuality whether it’s through words, clothing, hairstyle, or art forms such as writing and drawing. Self expression can come in all forms of how a person defines themselves in a society that closes them in to fit the typical “normal” human being.

I express myself through writing, I believe that words written out on paper tend to flow out of the body and convey an emotional passage. You start to understand yourself on a deeper level and develop passions and talents that speak not only to your mind but to your heart as well. By committing to yourself, you realize your potential and conquer what frustration and demons that are inside and let them free through a type of meditation.

Writing honours the desires and wants through the mind and makes the mind perform in wonders of which you didn’t believe it could. Not all poetry rhythms or has a specific topic once you start, but once you begin, you may never be able to stop the flow of how your pencil sweeps over the paper that begins to canvas your entire reality.

One of my favourite spoken word poets is award winning poet and author Shane Koyczan, a Canadian, age 39 who writes poetry about issues like bullying, cancer, death, and eating disorders.

He is most famous for the anti-bullying poem “To This Day” which has over 18 million views. Koyczan’s poetry is strong and memorable to the point of which his readings will bring you to tears and make you reflect on your overall being.

“If you can’t see anything beautiful about yourself, get a better mirror.” – Shane Koyczan

By voicing your opinion on relatable topics most or all people can relate to, gives the reader a sense of fulfilment, touching not only the heart and mind but the soul of a person.

Self- expression is one of the hardest yet most satisfying feelings a person can bring upon themselves, with not worrying about what others think and working towards your dreams is the way to live your life is prosperity.
