BIZ X WAS THERE – The Gordie Howe International Bridge Grand Opening
The Official Opening Of The Gordie Howe International Bridge History was made on July 24, 2026, as the Gordie Howe International Bridge was officially inaugurated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Windsor, marking the completion of one of North America’s most significant infrastructure projects.
The celebration brought together an impressive gathering of dignitaries, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford; the Hon. Gregor Robertson, Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, and Minister responsible for
Pacific Economic Development Canada; Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens; Canadian Ambassador to the United States Mark Wiseman; Essex Mayors and Councillors; representatives of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority; construction partners; and members of the Howe family. Their presence reflected years of collaboration, determination, and engineering excellence that transformed a long-held vision into reality.
Minister Robertson was the keynote speaker at the Gordie Howe International Bridge Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and later answered questions from the media.
Before he left, Biz X’s Joe McParland asked him to clarify the funding structure for the $6.4 billion Canada-financed bridge, considering the recent Canada-U.S. Revised Agreement in relation to the original Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement signed on June 15, 2012, by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.

In the video you can also see the first-ever simulated commercial clearance of a truck took place at the Gordie Howe International Bridge commercial truck primary line for the assembled media. We also include statements from Town of Essex Mayor Sherry Bondy; CEO Workforce Windsor-Essex Justin Falconer and Town of Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara and of course, the cutting of the ribbon by VIPS in attendance.
Named in honour of Canadian hockey legend Gordie Howe, the six-lane international crossing strengthens the vital trade corridor between Windsor and Detroit while creating a direct highway-to-highway connection linking Highway 401 with Interstate-75. The bridge is expected to improve the movement of goods and travellers, supporting economic growth on both sides of the border for decades to come.
Beyond the speeches and ceremonial ribbon cutting, the event celebrated the thousands of workers, engineers, and partners whose dedication made this landmark achievement possible. As the bridge prepares to welcome its first vehicles, it stands not only as an engineering marvel, but also as a lasting symbol of vision, resilience, and the enduring importance of cross-border connections.
