BANA Celebrates EDAW with Be YourSELFIE Campaign
As part of Eating Disorder Awareness Week 2018, eating disorder groups across Canada are coming together to host awareness-raising and educational activities in their communities to help dispel myths about eating disorders and support positive self- esteem and body image. With eating disorders having a higher mortality rate than any other mental health illness, BANA will mark Eating Disorders Awareness Week 2018 with a campaign encouraging people to be themselves through our “Be YourSELFIE” project (an extension of last year’s campaign.)
In today’s technological age, all too often we are subjected to, or participate in, the editing of photos to “enhance”, “filter” or “modify” the end result into preconceived images of what the “ideal” body image should be. We also tend to get caught up in comparisons on social media, thus affecting our self-esteem and body image.
We think that being yourself is beautiful and this should be celebrated. Though the use of a standard Polaroid camera, no filters or editing, we will be asking people to share who they are in the moment and truly – Be Yourself while holding a positive message on a letter board (to serve as a reminder to think and be positive.)
