Canadians Are Staycationing, Decline in Travel to the U.S. Likely to Continue

Statistics Canada has just released a report revealing that Canadians Are Staycationing and travel to the United States decreased 4.1% in February 2016 compared to January 2016.

According to Travelzoo travel experts, they say that travel outside of Canada will likely continue to decrease in the coming months. “We’re finding that Canadians are less interested in traveling abroad,” says Travelzoo Country Manager Lara Barlow. “The past few months have wreaked havoc on the travel industry. Between the low Canadian dollar, the zika virus outbreak and the recent terrorist attacks, more Canadians are deciding to vacation closer to home.”

According to recent Travelzoo polls, there has been a considerable increase in Canadians vacationing domestically. A poll conducted in November, when the dollar hovered near $0.75US, 8% of respondents said they only planned to travel domestically. In a more recent poll (conducted on April 9-14, 2016) that number rose to 47%.

The November poll also found that 60% of Canadians were planning on a U.S. vacation in the next year and that number has now lowered to 36%.

“We’ve also seen other indicators supporting the downward trend in U.S. travel,” says Barlow. When we look at what our 1.6 million members are searching for, as far as vacation destinations, Orlando and Las Vegas are always in the top ten, but we’ve seen a decline in interest year-over-year.” Barlow notes that interest in Las Vegas is down 10% and interest in Orlando is down 68% in April 2016, compared to April 2015.

While Canadians’ interest in the U.S. continues to decline, there are some cities where interest is increasing. “We’ve seen an increased interest in New York and we believe that’s because there are a lot more deals to be had there,” explains Barlow. “There has been a sizable increase in hotel room availability in New York, which translates into lower rates. That is going to draw Canadians who are open to a U.S. vacation.”
