Dangerous New Ransomware Threat uses Dropbox to Avoid Detection
Last year’s dominant ransomware variant (known as Locky) has all-but-disappeared due to effective anti-virus programs and public education. It has been dethroned by Cerber ransomware, which also arrives by email, but can be disguised as an innocent Dropbox file. Since Dropbox is a well-known repository for file sharing, people are more trusting of content they find there.
Although Cerber Ransomware has been around since mid-2016 and was initially rendered safe by security researchers, it has evolved into an effective weapon, due to its sophisticated delivery mechanism and novel marketing approach.
To protect yourself from the ravages of ransomware, security experts recommend you keep your backups up to date, and avoid clicking on any links – including Dropbox – that seem suspicious.
