$750,000 OTF Grant for Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Allows Program to Expand

On Wednesday, Life After Fifty welcomed members of the public for The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County’s (the Hospice) announcement of funding it received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). Local MPPs Lisa Gretzky and Percy Hatfield, along with OTF Grant Review Team member Dan Allen were on hand to congratulate the Hospice and hear more about how the expansion of the Windsor-Essex Compassion Care Community (WECCC) program is making a difference in the community

I offer my congratulations to Windsor-Essex Compassion Care Community and The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County, on the award of this substantial Ontario Trillium Foundation grant,” said Windsor West MPP Lisa Gretzky. “Once again, the Ontario Trillium Foundation has recognized the invaluable community focused work being done in Windsor and Essex County, and we thank them for this. We pride ourselves on living in a compassionate community, but we must always strive to do better. The WECCC initiative has already helped many Windsor residents experiencing isolation and this $750,000 Trillium grant will help to ensure more of our vulnerable citizens receive support.”

Within the span of their first year, the Windsor-Essex Compassion Care Community helped over 360 individuals experiencing isolation in our community,” said Percy Hatfield, MPP for Windsor-Tecumseh. “The $750,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation will allow the WECCC to continue their invaluable work of building a more compassionate and inclusive community. Congratulations to WECCC, and thank you to the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Erie St. Clair LHIN, GreenShield Canada Foundation, and the Home Instead Foundation for continuing to provide support for this important initiative.”

By helping people at risk of social isolation, funds received by the Hospice will help, through WECCC’s services, support 1,500 people increase their connections to friends, neighbours and community volunteers. With a unified vision, WECCC has been working with the community to help people who are isolated – which includes people who are elderly, disabled, at end of life, newcomers and caregivers – get the support and social connections they need to live well. WECCC services and supports are now available to people in Windsor, and the seven municipalities in Essex county.

The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County Inc. stands as a symbol of hope, providing compassionate care designed to enhance quality of life. It is the first community-based palliative hospice village in North America.

The Windsor-Essex Compassion Care Community (WECCC) is citizens, families, neighbours, service providers, businesses and community leaders who believe in the power of community.
