The Great Canadian Flag Project Installation
The Great Canadian Flag Project, which started in 2012, reached a major milestone today with the pole being erected at the foot of Ouellette Avenue.
Under sunny skies and against the background of the Detroit skyline, the 150 foot, 13,400 pound pole was anchored to its engineered base early this morning. Once completely erect, it will reach a height comparable to Commerce Bank building across the street.

This comes just a week before the ceremony celebrating Windsor’s 125th Birthday during which the 60 foot by 30 foot, 100 pound Canadian Flag will be raised by an electrically operated internal halyard.
Describing what this project means for Canada’s 4th most culturally diverse city, The Great Canadian Flag Project website states, “We all know Canada is a nation of immigrants. Some arriving over 50,000 years ago some arrived, yesterday. Our ancestral paths are varied. We are all bound by love of country, protected by laws that guarantee our freedom to speak, to worship without fear, to assemble in peace. We are guaranteed the right to vote and a free and unrestricted press. Together we will celebrate these rights and freedoms.”
Formal Ceremonies and the official flag raising of the Great Canadian Flag will occur following the Mayor’s Walk at Dieppe Gardens, 78 Riverside Dr W, Windsor, on Sat, 20 May, 10:30am – 11:30am. The public is invited to attend and share in a barbeque immediately after near the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre.
