WELCOME TO THE ‘60S! HAIRSPRAY AT WALKERVILLE!

Step back in time… prepare to be delighted, entertained and maybe even challenged!

This light-hearted comedy mixes in beautifully the more serious themes of the early 60s.

The iconic Hairspray story is not only brought to life by the students at Walkerville Centre for the Creative Arts and Walkerville Collegiate Institute – it literally may get you dancing in your seats.

With great songs like “You Can’t Stop The Beat”, “Good Morning Baltimore” and “I Can Hear the Bells”, fantastic dance numbers and unforgettable characters, Hairspray is sure to entertain.

It’s 1962, and plus-sized Baltimore teenager Tracy Turnblad wants nothing more than to dance on the local TV sock hop, The Corny Collins Show, and maybe to catch the attention of singing sensation Link Larkin. But Tracy gets more than that when she leads the fight to integrate Baltimore television.

Destiny Coulter plays Tracy, the plucky dancing queen, while Nick Palazzolo plays the object of her affection, Link.

Previously, Destiny played the Merchant of Ephesus in The Comedy of Errors, and Mayor Dawgmeat in Li’l Abner.

Nick was Nell the maid in The Comedy of Errors, and Marryin’ Sam in Li’l Abner; he also has performed with Korda Artistic Productions, Cardinal Music Productions, and ACT.

Nick is part of the well-known Palazzolo musical dynasty of Windsor/Essex County – so he gets this singing and entertaining talent honestly. Watch out world – this young man is on his way!

Hairspray is directed by WCCA Program Leader Jeff Marontate; instrumental music direction is by Amanda Sands; vocal direction is by Sarah Preney, and choreography is by Roger Wellington and Jennifer Fatallah.

The Tony award winning musical Hairspray, with book by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan, music by Marc Shaiman, and lyrics by Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman.

Hairspray runs April 27, 28, May 3, 4 & 5 at 7:00, and April 29 at 2:00 in the auditorium of Walkerville Collegiate Institute at 2100 Richmond Street. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students, and are available at the door.
