Windsor Providing Support for Post-Storm Tree and Flooding Cleanup
Following this weekend’s severe weather and significant rainfall, the City of Windsor is currently responding to requests for service across the community while rolling out additional supports.
Tree Damages Due to Storm
As part of the City of Windsor’s standard emergency response, Forestry crews have been working through service requests for downed trees impacting municipal right-of-way with over 800 requests received starting this weekend following the significant storm.
The City encourages residents to continue to log a “Tree Damage Due to Storm” service request on the Windsor 311 app or online portal if on municipal property. Also, the City will continue to address the large tree limb cleanup as part of the ongoing tree maintenance program.
Additional Tree Waste Collection Starts Tomorrow
The City, in partnership with Miller Waste, will be providing a special tree waste collection for Windsor residents over the next two weeks, starting tomorrow in collection Zones B this week and then in Zones A next week (refer to waste collection schedule). Pick-ups of storm related tree waste will be performed on the same day of week similar to past leaf and yard waste collection schedule pickup dates.
For this additional pick-up schedule, Windsor residents are asked to:
- Limit the length of the branches to 4 feet (122 centimetres);
- Limit the thickness of the branches to no more than 4 inches (10 centimetres) thick;
- Limit the weight of the branches to 44 pounds (20 kilograms); and
- Tie tree branches together, if possible.
Any other storm-related tree waste not meeting the above requirements can be dropped off at the City’s yard waste depot (3560 North Service Rd. East) at no charge.
For those homeowners with damaged items or materials that were affected by flooding, please follow these steps:
- Contact your insurance provider before starting the house waste cleanup.
- Afterwards, please log a “Basement Flooding” service request on the Windsor 311 app or online portal by end of day Friday, July 10, 2026, and the City of Windsor will provide a special waste collection pickup.
- Residents are responsible for ensuring flood damaged items or materials are set out at the curb prior to submitting the service request.
- Please note that paint and chemicals should not be included in this waste collection. Learn more about the Household Chemical Waste Depot.
Reduce the Risk of Flooding by Taking Action in Your Home
With more rainfall in the forecast, the City of Windsor is reminding residents that taking action at home can significantly reduce the risk of basement flooding in our community.
What can individual homeowners do?
- Ensure your home’s downspouts are disconnected from the municipal drain system so that storm water is deposited on lawns or in rain gardens. This reduces the amount of water in the sewers, thereby helping to prevent sewer backup.
- Ensure the grading around your foundation is sloped away from the exterior walls. This will help direct water further from your home where it can pool and drain naturally once the rain ends.
- Ensure catch basins are clear of leaves and debris and able to receive water to help to prevent flooding on roadways near your home.
- If you have a sump pump and/or backwater valve, check to ensure all is working properly.
For more information, please contact 311.
Please note: 311 is currently experiencing higher than normal call volumes, which may impact wait times. Residents are encouraged to use the Windsor 311 mobile app or online portal, whenever possible, to avoid wait times and log service requests more quickly and easily, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
