MAJOR SNOW THURSDAY FEB 8 2018 ON ITS WAY

Tecumseh

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement outlining approximately 15-20 cm of snow expected overnight Thursday/into Friday and an additional 3-7 cm expected Saturday/Sunday.

Tecumseh Public Works and the OPP remind everyone to help keep streets safe and to drive safe.

Town Roadways

  • Snow removal takes time in heavy accumulation. Watch for plows and keep a safe distance.
  • Snow plows are significantly bigger than passenger vehicles and have a wide plow width.
  • Plowing around parked vehicles creates a windrow of snow. The more snow that falls, the bigger the windrow created on streets with parked cars.
  • These windrows narrow the road width, preventing plows and Emergency Services vehicles from accessing streets. Please move your vehicles off the street to allow for full clearing of the roads.
  • Under the Highway Traffic Act, it is illegal to leave vehicles parked on streets impeding snow plow operations. It is at the discretion of the OPP whether they will tow a vehicle, issue a ticket or provide a warning to the vehicle owner on site to move their vehicle.
  • Plows will not be sent back to areas where cars were previously parked until the next snow fall.
  • For streets where there are no driveways, we ask that you move your vehicle after the first pass of the snow plow so crews can address the snow built up.
  • Driveways will have snow windrowed across the driveway while plowing the road. Do not push snow back into the roadway.

Sidewalks

  • As per Town By-law 2016-06, all snow and ice must be removed from sidewalks in front of commercial buildings within four hours of snow fall or ice formation and twelve hours in front of residential buildings.
  • We also ask that residents be kind to their neighbours and help out wherever possible. If you know someone who is unable to shovel or is struggling, be a good neighbor and assist them. Information on the Town’s snow angel program is available online.
  • The Town does clear portions of sidewalks on a designated route. In some instances blowing snow across these areas causes re-accumulation of snow. Please be cautious on sidewalks around public areas where this occurs.

Driver Safety

  • Drivers are encouraged to stay home during inclement weather if they do not have to go out.
  • If you do need to go out, please clean off your car to prevent lack of visibility for yourself and other drivers; drive according to conditions not your vehicle/tire performance; watch for pedestrians on sidewalks and at corners; and, ensure you have an emergency kit in case of a safety issue. Bus cancellations are the responsibility of the school board and bus companies not the Town.

We appreciate residents’ patience and understanding during weather events. Please assist in keeping our roads clear of snow. Keeping our roads clear is a priority and it helps keep our community safe.

Information on this and all Town of Tecumseh news and events is available online.

Windsor

Plowing will begin once the snow begins to fall and accumulate.  An average route takes from 2 to 4 hours to complete.  Once the main roads are clear, but only if more than 10 centimetres has fallen, trucks will be redeployed onto residential streets.

Motorists are asked to be patient when travelling behind a plow and give operators plenty of room.  Plows typically operate at 40 kilometres per hour.  Following too close to a snowplow can lead to poor visibility and vehicles risk being hit by thrown snow or ice.

Residents are reminded that sidewalks abutting their property are their responsibility. As well, under the Highway Traffic Act and City of Windsor By-laws, residents are prohibited from shovelling snow back onto the street while clearing sidewalks and driveways, as this creates unsafe road conditions for motorists.  All sidewalks are to be cleared 12 hours after the snowfall ends for residential property owners and 4 hours for commercial property owners.

Finally, when driving in snowy and icy conditions, drivers are asked to “stay alert, slow down and stay in control”.  By leaving plenty of time to reach your destination, your chances of getting there safely are greatly improved.

For more information, please stay tuned to the local media and visit the city website for general information on snow clearing, including a map on where plows have been.
