”Stigma Enigma” THE SILENT EPIDEMIC -SUICIDE
800,000 people worldwide [Reported this number is considered to be likely much higher amongst Health Practitioners] die of suicide each year.
That is 200,000 in the last 3 months . This is roughly one life lost every 40 seconds. Mental illness is very common [at least reported] with 1 out of 5 people experiencing mental health challenges in their lifetime.
Mental illness causes long term harm-alcoholism, drug addiction, loss of jobs, loss of spouse and in the worst case scenarios loss of life.
Mental illness can be very lethal.
The stigma of suicide prevents the needed media attention it deserves.
Suicide is preventable. It is a public health matter and Canada deserves a suicide prevention strategy! Death is not the answer.
