Tecumseh Snow Removal Reminder
Winter has arrived in Tecumseh. Approximately 10 cm of snow fell on Tuesday, December 12 and an additional 10-18 cm is expected today. Plows are out and crews prepared for this upcoming snowfall however Tecumseh Public Works Staff and the OPP have important reminders for property owners and drivers in Town:
Sidewalks and Roadways:
- Vehicles parked on the street must be moved if more than 15 cm (6”) of snow accumulates. Vehicles left on the road are subject to fines/towing.
- As per Town By-law 2016-06, all snow and ice must be removed from sidewalks in front of commercial buildings within four (4) hours of snow fall or ice formation and twelve (12) hours in front of residential buildings. This by-law and Section 181 of the Highway Traffic Act prohibit snow being pushed out onto the street. Tecumseh reminds owners that pushing snow into the street is not just against the law, it’s also a hazard. We want residents and drivers to be safe this winter and we hope owners do too.
- We also ask that residents be kind to their neighbours and help out wherever possible. If you know someone who is unable to shovel or is struggling, be a good neighbor and assist them.
Winter Maintenance Work:
- Snow removal takes time especially in heavy accumulation. If you see snow removal equipment, keep a safe distance. You may see them but they may not see you.
- Snow plows have limited control of the amount and direction of the snow coming off the blade.
- Driveways will have snow pushed back across the driveway while plowing the road. Do not push snow back into the roadway.
- Watch for the plow blade when passing snow plows. They may be obscured by snow and cleared debris.
- Do not travel beside a snow plow. They can shift sideways after hitting snow packs or drifts.
- Plows can create temporary white-out conditions with swirling snow. Safely pull to the side or slow-down in these conditions.
The Town is also seeking volunteers for the Snow Angel program, please visit online for further details.
