The Lucky Few Tattoo – World Down Syndrome Day 2018
Connected together by an extra 21st chromosome and a local charity, a group of local moms and dads are getting together on Wednesday March 21, 2018, also known as World Down Syndrome Day 2018, to get a matching tattoo.
World Down syndrome Day, celebrated on the 21st day of the third month of the year represents the three copies of the 21st chromosome, comprising the extra chromosome that people with Down syndrome have. This genetic irregularity puts people affected by Down syndrome at greater risk for certain health conditions and presents different challenges for them in the way they learn and move through the world.
To unite families in celebrating the day, the Chasing Hazel Foundation is hosting a Down syndrome tattoo day for all of those who are united by loving someone with Down syndrome at Sanctuary Tattoos in Windsor.
The Chasing Hazel Foundation, founded in 2017, educates and raises awareness about how important individuals with Down syndrome are to our community. The charity’s vision for the future is for the world to be a more accepting place where potential is highlighted, differences are celebrated, and the uniqueness of each individual person is respected and appreciated.
The tattoo, an arrow comprised of three chevrons, represents unity and courage and symbolizes strength and magic in the community of those who get to take the journey together.
What started from a group of moms who have children with Down syndrome in the United States several months ago, has turned into a global movement with moms and dads around the world getting the ‘lucky few tattoo’.
People, like local mom Joanna Conrad, who admit they never thought they’d get a tattoo are going under the needle to show their love and support for people with the syndrome. Now the movement is going viral, with thousands taking to social media using the hashtag #theluckyfewtattoo to share their photos and stories.
Why an arrow?
“An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backwards. So, when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it’s going to launch you into something great.”
Receiving a diagnosis of Down syndrome can leave some families feeling very alone. A sense of belonging can help people through hard times and the Lucky Few tattoo is a constant, visual reminder for these parents of the special tribe they now have the pleasure of belonging to.
