Canadian Red Cross in Lakeshore About Flood Related Emergencies
The Canadian Red Cross will be in Lakeshore, Windsor and Essex County visiting homes in areas that experienced flooding beginning March 30 and ending April 17. They are exploring new ways of helping residents understand how to reduce flood risk at their homes and how to prepare for flood-related emergencies.
The Canadian Red Cross (CRC) is working with the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation and the University of Waterloo on a new Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) program. The Canadian Red Cross has been a leader in emergency preparedness for many years, educating hundreds of thousands of Canadians on how to be prepared and the importance of emergency preparedness kits and planning. With climate changes and increases in the number of disasters, CRC is becoming increasingly involved in DRR as part of ongoing commitment to working alongside communities to increase disaster preparedness and resiliency.
The Town of Lakeshore, along with Windsor-Essex has been selected for this national pilot. The CRC Volunteers will go door-to-door, helping homeowners learn about local flood risk as well as easy things they can do in their own homes to reduce this risk. Volunteers will be wearing Red Cross vests and carrying Red Cross identification with them and all information will be exchanged at the door- no entry to homes will be required.
The CRC Volunteers will also include information on Lakeshore’s Flood Prevention Subsidy programs. Lakeshore offers a number of flood prevention subsidy programs to all residents, regardless of where they live including:
- Free camera inspection of private drain connections around your home;
- $225 for Sump pump overflow outlet valve installation, with a waiver of the permit fee;
- $75 subsidy towards downspout disconnection;
- Up to $750 for installation of a backwater valve.
