The Homeless Community Has Nothing to be Ashamed Of
Just because we may not know what to say or do when someone asks us for money, we don’t know their story or even most of the time their names but everyone is so quick to judge.
This morning on my way to work, I was waiting for the bus downtown and had a woman come up to me and ask for some change for a coffee. As I normally do, I gave her $2 and she cried. I was confused and asked what was wrong and she said that everyone she asked for three days said no because they assumed she was going to use the money to buy drugs.
She explained that she became homeless last year when she was laid off from her job and wasn’t able to pay for rent. She wasn’t an addict, an alcoholic or being a burden but an honest person wanting to be able to take on the day with a morning coffee.
I know this is a rare scenario for many people to think about and I may have gotten lucky to meet her this morning but never judge a book by their cover. This woman was truly inspiring and wanted to become “a part of the community” again.
I was very thankful to have met this beautiful soul this morning.
You may never know if or when you may be in their shoes one day.
If you don’t feel comfortable giving people money or taking them for a coffee. Having Tim Hortons cards handy to give to those in need or having a conversation with our community members.
I’m sure glad I did.
