Town of LaSalle Launches Administrative Monetary Penalty System
The Town of LaSalle has launched a new Administrative Monetary Penalty System (AMPS). This will allow residents who receive a parking and/or by-law ticket or a penalty notice, to pay or dispute the notice with the Town of LaSalle. Previously, the tickets or notices would be paid to the City of Windsor. Likewise, disputes were handled in the provincial court system.
“The Town will now have control over the payment of tickets for things like minor parking and by-law infractions,” said Linda Jean, Deputy Clerk. “It will be a more streamlined process.”
Once the ticket is issued, the resident will have 15 days to make payment. Those payments can be made in person, by mail with a cheque or through a new online payment service available through the Town’s website.
Non-payment will result in administrative fees. For parking penalties, after 30 days unpaid notices will be sent to the Service Ontario/Ministry of Transportation who will deny the renewal of existing plates, or the issuance of new vehicle plates until the debt is paid. For all other by-law infractions, after 30 days, any unpaid notices will be added to the individual’s property taxes.
Residents will also have the option to dispute a ticket or notice through the Town. A meeting must be scheduled with the Screening Officer within 15 days to discuss the penalty notice. The Screening Officer has the authority to uphold, cancel, reduce or extend the time to pay the penalty. If the resident disagrees with the decision of the Screening Officer, they have up to 15 days from the date of the decision to request a review by a Hearing Officer. The decision of the Hearing Officer is final.
