MAY 2025 NEWSFLASH – Coxon’s Sales + Rentals Ltd.; Antonino’s Original Pizza Inc.; weCHC’s AMANI Program; The Owl’s Nest Emporium; Imagine Cinemas Lakeshore & Lynn McLaughlin
THE RUNDOWN
Joe Ciaravino, President of Antonino’s Original Pizza Inc., a pizza chain in Windsor Essex, is showing his company’s national pride with his latest pizza creation — The Angry Canadian. What’s on The Angry Canadian? It’s topped with whole milk mozzarella cheese (Galati Cheese Company); Windsor-style shredded pepperoni (Salamina of Laval, Quebec); double centre-cut bacon (Olymel of Brampton); fresh
mushrooms (grown in Kingsville by Highline Mushrooms); and the ingredient that makes it angry . . . pickled hot peppers (pickled by Lakeside Packing Company Ltd. of Harrow). Given current events, Antonino’s is right on point promoting their new pizza with the slogan: no tax, no tariffs! While all Canadian toppings assure that the pizza will remain tariff-free, how does Ciaravino get away with not charging the 13% HST? “We still have to charge and remit sales tax to Revenue Canada — there’s no way around that,” Ciaravino explains. “However, by discounting The Angry Canadian 13%, when the tax is added, our customers end up paying menu price. It’s as if no HST was applied.” There are five locations in the region: South Windsor, LaSalle, Riverside, Tecumseh, and Leamington. To view their complete menu and the exact address for the closest spot to pick up a pizza to enjoy, visit their website.

The Windsor Essex Community Health Centre (weCHC), recently introduced AMANI, (which is the Swahili word for peace and the Arabic word for wishes). It’s the new name for what was previously known as the Substance Abuse Program for African Canadian and Caribbean Youth (SAPACCY). While the name has changed, the mission remains the same — to provide Black youth with culturally responsive mental health and substance use support. “AMANI represents a space where Black youth can find culturally affirming care and meaningful support,” says Nadine Manroe-Wakerell, weCHC Director of Clinical Practice. “This evolution strengthens our commitment to ensuring youth have access to the resources they need to heal, grow, and thrive.” AMANI reflects a broader focus on holistic wellness, moving beyond substance use to ensure Black youth and their families receive comprehensive and compassionate care. The program continues to provide the same trusted services without disruption, reinforcing its role as a vital resource in the community. “This is more than just a name change — it’s a reflection of our values and the work we do every day,” adds Nancy Brockenshire, weCHC Executive Director. “Equitable accesses to care means ensuring Black youth have safe, culturally affirming spaces where they feel heard and supported.” By transitioning to AMANI, weCHC reaffirms its dedication to delivering inclusive, community-driven healthcare that meets the unique needs of Black youth. HALL OF FAME
Kingsville’s Lynn McLaughlin has been recognized on the global stage with a Silver Award at the 2025 Women Changing the World Global Awards and Summit held on April 2 and 3, 2025 in London, England. Chosen from over 2,000 global entries, McLaughlin was one of only five Canadians named as finalists. Led by ambassadors, Duchess Sarah Ferguson and Dr. Tererai Trent, the event celebrates women making meaningful change worldwide. McLaughlin was recognized in the Woman Adult Education & Training category for her work in children’s mental health and proactive well-being strategies. “To be in a room filled with women collectively creating positive change — it was truly electrifying,” says McLaughlin. “None of this would have been possible without my incredible niece and co-author, Amber Raymond. She’s been the heart of this mission.” With over 35-years of experience in education as a teacher, principal and superintendent, McLaughlin has gained valuable insights into the growing mental health challenges students face. Her work is rooted in a deep belief that we can nurture a generation equipped with the skills they need to thrive. As a brain tumour survivor and someone who has supported others through mental health struggles, she understands resilience and compassion firsthand.
