Shakespeare’s Epic Work Othello presented as University of Windsor Season Opener
Friday September 27, 2019, the season opens with an epic performance of Othello, one of Shakespeare most famous tragedies. Students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts: Acting program will be put to the test as they take on this challenging show that displays the best and worst of human nature in a tale of jealousy, betrayal, and murder.
Director Tanisha Taitt highlights the importance of the performance, “I am thrilled to be directing Othello in its entirety. Commonly presented in an abridged form, we’re bringing an epic opening to the U.P. season with a full-length presentation. Not only is it very important in a university setting to have the students experience the complete story arc, but to remove portions of text is to decide which parts of a story I will deny the audience. I cannot know which moments people will be moved by, or which will make them laugh. I cannot know which line may be the line that resonates inside of someone forever. And so, our celebration of one of Shakespeare’s best preserves every word of the original text. Othello is a literary opus and this production honours that. It is rare to be able to see this piece in all of its glory. The U.P. audience will have that opportunity, and that really excites me.” Taitt is a guest artist from Toronto area, who brings with her a wealth of experience as an educator, singer, playwright, director, and performance artist. She was recently named the artistic director of Cahoots Theatre in Toronto.
