Be Passionate About Your Career

As my first year of college has subsided almost as quickly as it came, I found myself not knowing what to do with myself. As a Journalism student, I am always thinking of my next big move and how to work my way to the top. What I didn’t know is that this would teach me a lesson I would never forget.

As an young adult, money is always on the mind. The thought of will I have enough or will I have to get another job is constantly egging in the back of my head. I was offered a job that wasn’t in my field of interest nor did it appeal to me in the slightest. With that all said, I immediately wanted to take the job regardless of what it entailed. I wanted to be able to pay for school as soon as I get out, I wanted to be able to expand my interests in order to take the job, but that’s what got me thinking.

As I write for a magazine and work for a radio station, I am right where I want to be. I shouldn’t have to reach out of my comfort zone and dig into something deeper that I don’t want to dig into in the first place. I realized something, the job should be offered to someone who wants to be in that line of work, as per someone who doesn’t want to be in that position and taking the job just for some extra cash.

I came to the conclusion that I rather stay in my field of interest and love what I do. Jobs will always come up and as a passionate 19-year-old, I don’t want to strip away opportunities from others that I may not be fully my 100% doing.

With that being said, I hope many young adults learn from my decision. Be passionate about what you love and strive for nothing else than what makes you happy. Expanding your dreams is always great but never stray away from what you love and what you wish to do with your life. You may get lost along the way but your heart will always come back to what you love most, and for me, it was writing.

A wise man once told me, “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” Yes, this wise man was my dad. Being able to say that you are in the field of your choosing and that you worked hard to get where you are is one of the biggest accomplishments a person can give themselves.
