Rocky Campana Memorial GSA Leadership Scholarship to Award 7 Recipients

Tuesday June 13 marks the 11th school year that the Run for Rocky Legacy Project has presented yearly scholarships marking a giveaway of $37,000 to 39 students. This year a record number of applications were received and 7 students will be presented with a scholarship. The usual total give of $3000 has been increased to $5000 this year to make a little difference in the lives of the GSA (Gay Straight Alliance Clubs) Student Leaders who have been in our local high schools making a difference every day. These students have been working diligently in their schools to advocate for the 2SLGBTQI+ community and are truly changing their schools environments, ensuring 2SLGBTQI+ students have visibility, safer spaces and support from administration.

The Rocky Campana Annual GSA Leadership Memorial Scholarship is based on the leadership qualities Rocky had to get involved starting at a grade school level. Rocky organized fundraisers, volunteered of his time and gave back to his grade school, high school and university on a daily basis. Rocky used his voice and plans of action to change the lives of other students and ensure injustices were pointed out and altered.

Although this year’s recipients are commended for their outstanding marks, the reason each student is being awarded this scholarship is based wholly on the mirrored leadership they possess and Rocky embodied. The hope is that these students will continue to advocate for and support other students as they move on to post-secondary school. Their leadership is also needed back in our community when they graduate from college or university.

As a family we look forward to this year’s Windsor Essex PrideFest celebration in August when two events will take place to help continue the financial support and long term funding model of the Run for Rocky Legacy Project. This funding model of is the only one of its kind in Canada that financially supports Gay Straight Alliance Clubs in local schools:
