Bigger Isn’t Always Better, Small Businesses Are Important

Each October we celebrate Small Business Month and this year, is no different.

Of course in every edition of Biz X magazine (and on: BizXmagazine.com) we always shine the editorial spotlight on small business owners; however, it takes on a special meaning in October. And in a world where it seems as if online shopping is taking over and big box stores are cashing in even more, we have to emphasize the importance of supporting local.

We need to thank and appreciate all business owners in the region as much as we can . . . and help them increase their sales, create more jobs and keep your money in the community.

“Small Business Month is a time to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit that drives our local economy and creates vibrant communities,” states Sabrina DeMarco, Executive Director of the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Centre (a division of Invest WindsorEssex).

The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Centre (SBEC) usually has a major event in October, and for 2025, along with the Windsor Essex Chamber of Commerce, they are hosting the Small Business Summit. The goal is to bring together entrepreneurs and small business owners from across the region for a dynamic half-day of learning, networking and inspiration.

Designed to help local businesses elevate their knowledge, strategy and community connections, the summit features a keynote presentation by James Boettcher, CEO and Custodian of Culture at Righteous (small batch gelato), a panel discussion with leading local entrepreneurs, and breakout sessions on marketing, leadership, funding and sustainability.

The summit is held on October 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Clair College Centre for the Arts. For more details on the panelists and to register, please go online.

“We’re providing entrepreneurs with access to valuable expertise, resources and connections that can truly make a difference in their journey,” outlines DeMarco. “We encourage all business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs to attend, learn from industry leaders and take advantage of this opportunity to invest in themselves and their future success.”

This event is a great example of the programming, resources and support the SBEC provides to the Windsor Essex business community.

Over the years, the SBEC has provided thousands of entrepreneurs with essential training and guidance, from ideation and business concept development through start-up, operations, early growth and expansion.

In 2024 alone, SBEC delivered impressive results, advising nearly 1,500 local businesses and facilitating 140 new start-ups, 102 business expansions and the creation of 464 jobs.

“As a community, we all benefit when local entrepreneurs succeed,” DeMarco states. “The impact of SBEC’s work is seen not only in the new businesses and jobs created, but also in the innovation, resilience and vibrancy these entrepreneurs bring to Windsor Essex. Supporting them at every stage of their journey helps strengthen our regional economy and ensures long-term prosperity.”

Happy Small Business Month, everyone!
