Windsor Citizens presented Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers

At the City Council meeting of November 20, 2017, Mr. Jerry Barycki, Ms Denise Hebert and Mrs. Scholastica Lyanga were recognized for their commitment and dedication to volunteering in our community to a full house in Council Chambers.
Recipients are recognized for making significant, sustained and unpaid contributions to their community demonstrating an exemplary commitment through their dedicated volunteerism.
The Chancellery of Honours, part of the Office of the Secretary to the Governor General, administers the program and receives all nominations. Each one is carefully researched and then reviewed by an advisory committee, which makes recommendations to the governor general. The selection process is non-partisan and merit-based. Presentation ceremonies are held throughout the year, in communities across Canada.
As an official Canadian honour, the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers builds on the legacy and spirit of the Caring Canadian Award by honouring the dedication and commitment of volunteers.
His Worship Mayor Drew Dilkens presented the Sovereign’s Medal to Hebert, Barycki and Lyanga as community supporters (volunteers) standing to enhancing a quality of life of our diverse community – civic organizations, social agencies and citizens from all walks of life.

Herbert has served twenty-five years coaching with the University of Windsor’s Track and Field team.

Lyanga is dedicated to raising awareness of social justice for our new Canadians in partnership with Windsor Women Wording with Immigrant Women, United Way and C.C.A.C (Community Care Access Centre).
Barycki was recognized as a mentor and role model for business and youth serving as Chairman, National Council Canadian-Polish Congress and President of the Polish-Canadian Business and Professional Association of Windsor.
