The City of Windsor is preparing to launch its fifth Spay Neuter Voucher Program for cats next month.

This $50,000 program was approved by City Council in the 2016 Operating Budget.

In an effort to reduce the number of homeless cats and the number of cats euthanized in the city, 700 vouchers will be issued to sterilize cats.  The vouchers are valued at $75 each (including HST) and the initial release phase of 400 vouchers will be available in March 2016 with the exact launch date to be determined. A second phase of 300 vouchers will be available in May 2016.

Vouchers for owned cats are reserved for low-income families.  A declaration of income will be required, and a maximum of 2 vouchers per household will be issued. For feral cat caregivers, a maximum of 4 vouchers per household will be issued, with no income restrictions.

Changes to the 2016 program include:

  • There will be no waiting list accommodation once all vouchers have been allocated;
  • The voucher expiry term of 90 days will not be extended;
  • Vouchers will not be transferrable once issued;
  • Recipients of Phase 1 vouchers will not be eligible to apply in Phase 2.

Vouchers may be redeemed at any participating veterinary clinic. Recipients must call and book appointments for spay/neuter services in advance.
