City of Windsor Nominations for 21 Best of Windsor-Essex Awards and Voting Underway to Select Official City Bird

The City of Windsor has received 21 nominations in the 8th Annual Best of Windsor-Essex Awards. The online initiative hosted by Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI) is about learning from locals where they like to dine, shop, play, explore and stay. The nomination period ran earlier this year, with nominees named in 47 categories.

“The annual Best of Windsor-Essex Awards provide an opportunity to showcase our community and to celebrate some of the best places, assets, amenities and experiences that the City of Windsor and surrounding region have to offer. I’m proud to see the list of nominations for the City of Windsor, which really highlight some of the reasons that Windsor is an incredible place to live, work, play, visit and invest. It’s also great to see this initiative utilized as a resource to help us choose Windsor’s Official City Bird. Congratulations to all the nominees who work together to make our communities soar.”

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens

Help Choose Windsor’s Official City Bird

Windsor was recently named a Bird-Friendly City by Nature Canada. As part of the Best of Windsor-Essex Awards, the City has partnered with TWEPI to help choose Windsor’s Official City Bird. During the nomination period, residents nominated various birds for consideration. The top five have moved on to the voting round, with residents now able to vote for their selection. The top five include:

  • Tufted Titmouse – This unique songbird has strong ties to oak woodland and oak savanna.
  • Peregrine Falcon – This bird of prey has adapted to living in urban environments across North America. In Windsor, they have often nested on the Ambassador Bridge.
  • Common Nighthawk – This remarkable bird hunts insects by flying with its mouth open wide.
  • Northern Cardinal – A familiar bird to many, the male is a striking bright red, while the female is a warm and camouflaged brown.
  • Black-capped Chickadee – This little songbird has one of the most familiar bird songs: “chick-a-dee-dee-dee-dee.”

More information on the top five birds can be found online.

The voting period for the Best of Windsor-Essex Awards opened February 6 and runs to February 26, 2023. Voting is online.
