Weird Teen Phases

As we enter 2018, I’m hoping we leave some weird trends/phases in the past. With the typical “he did it why can’t I phrase” popping into the heads of many who participated, many question why these were a trend in the first place.

Kylie Jenner Lip challenge – Yes, I know. Everyone wants gorgeous lips but why were so many insert their lips into a shot glass, small jar or bottle, then suck out the air, creating a vacuum? If you’re shaking your head, we’re on the same page. Not only can this be damaging to the lips as it creates bruises, blisters and even infections, but why is this even a thing?

Cinnamon challenge – Going way back to my year in 2007, I saw this all over my Facebook and Youtube. This challenge is when you put a spoonful of cinnamon in your mouth for under 60 seconds without taking it out or drinking anything. Now this may seem fun and funny to watch, right? The reactions can be priceless but this challenge can also cause many health problems. As the cinnamon dries the mouth, this can result in coughing, gagging, vomiting and inhaling of cinnamon, leading to throat irritation, breathing difficulties, and risk of pneumonia or a collapsed lung. Talk about scary!

Tide Pod challenge – Why this is a trend, I have no idea. Your guess is as good as mine. First it was a ‘meme’ and a joke about eating/biting into the pods back in 2015 has now resulted in teens actually eating them for a challenge. The liquid inside the pods can cause diarrhea, coughing spells and vomiting and can cause long term digestive problems if swallowed. The pods also contain a chemical known as 1,4-dioxane, a solvent that can cause eye and nose irritation, and kidney problems. LIKE WHY WOULD YOU EAT THIS!?

Water bottle challenge – Now this isn’t a life threatening trend but it is pretty interesting and hilarious how many people spend their time trying to perfect the water bottle flipping challenge. Using a half-filled water bottle, people try to flip the bottle so it lands on base. Seems simple right? This task can be extremely difficult but increasing entertaining. I think everyone should jump back on this bandwagon and stop eating things that well, aren’t meant to be eaten!

Check out these flips!
