NEWSFLASH January 2025 – Alzheimer’s Awareness Month; Windsor Racquet Club; Woven Events & Cake Cosmetix
THE RUNDOWN
Each January, the Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County recognizes Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. During this month, the society encourages area businesses and organizations across the region
to learn more about dementia and its stark impact on individuals and their families. Various fundraising events take place, locally, during this special month, such as the 2017 Biz X Award winning Most Wonderful Event of the Year — Battle of the Brains XIII on January 24, 2025 at the Ciociaro Club of Windsor. And while Alzheimer’s Awareness Month may stop at the end of January, the experiences of people who live with dementia DO NOT. Since 1981, the Alzheimer Society of Windsor and Essex County has been dedicated to serving those with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia, and their caregivers, in the community. If you would like to donate to the cause, host a fundraiser, become a volunteer, sponsor an event or learn about their programs or upcoming events, refer to their website.
NEW IN BIZ
If you love to play racquet sports, then you will be happy to know that Windsor Racquet Club is now open at Central Park Athletics, 3400 Grand Marais Road East! The facility will be developed in two phases, and once complete, this will be the first club in Canada to offer Pickleball, Squash and Padel — all under one roof. The exciting new venture will provide athletes of all levels a premier venue for these fast- growing racquet sports. Opened in December of 2024, Phase 1 features 3 Pickleball courts, and 1 Squash court. Phase 2 follows shortly after, and expands the facility to include 2 Padel courts, 3 more Pickleball courts, and 2 more Squash courts, bringing the total to 6 Pickleball courts, 3 Squash courts, and 2 Padel courts. This unique combination of sports offers Windsor residents and visitors a one-of-a-kind space to engage in dynamic, energetic game play across three popular racquet sports. Anis Khan, founder of Windsor Racquet Club, comments: “We are thrilled to bring this new multi-sport facility to Windsor. By offering Padel, Pickleball, and Squash in one location, we hope to foster a community that celebrates healthy competition and active living. This facility is not just for experienced players, but for newcomers of all ages who are interested in trying these exciting sports.” To note: Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong; Squash is a high-energy, fast-paced game and Padel is a blend of tennis and squash. The club aims to host leagues, tournaments, coaching clinics, and social events, offering opportunities for players of all abilities to participate. Since childhood, Norveen Dhindsa has been passionate about decorating with flowers and creating beautiful settings. This love for décor turned her home into a hub for gatherings, where she meticulously
planned every detail. Encouraged by friends and family, Dhindsa began to consider offering her talent to others. The turning point came with her own gender reveal party and baby shower, where she planned the décor on a tight budget. So, in November 2024, she executed her vision and took a leap of faith into event decorating for customers in the Windsor Essex and surrounding areas. “Starting my business, Woven Events, has been a big step and I’m learning something new every day,” Dhindsa comments. “I’m grateful for the support of my friends and family, especially my father and husband. This journey is just beginning, and I’m excited to bring beauty and warmth into special moments for my customers.” Though she is a one-woman show (her support team pitches in to help) the services her business offers for small to medium size events, include: a variety of customizable options for flowers and greenery, plus the setup and takedown of backdrops, overall décor and centrepieces for bridal showers, birthday parties, gender reveals, weddings, baby showers, housewarming events, or any occasion that deserves a celebration. As her business grows, Dhindsa plans to take on larger projects. To view a few photos of her outdoor and indoor recent work go to their website.

Owner/Operator Shay Lewis of Cake Cosmetix (a Windsor baking supply and décor shop) is thrilled to announce their new and bigger location in Pillette Village. “Our more central location allows us to
better serve our community, and we’re excited to offer more in-person workshops, including decorating your very own cake, cupcakes, and cookies, as well as paint nights,” explains Lewis. “Additionally, we’re
pleased to feature a variety of freshly-baked goods, such as cookies, butter tarts, grab-and-go cakes, brownies, and much more, with a weekly rotating menu.” The business previously operated out of a Howard Avenue location, from December 2023 to October 2024. A month was taken off to get the new shop ready for customers, with the doors officially re-opening in early December. Whether you’re stocking up on baking essentials, indulging in delicious sweets, or discovering amazing local gems from other Windsor Essex merchants, you’ll find what you need by stopping at the new location, 4661 Wyandotte Street East or shopping online.
