The City of Windsor wants to teach you more about the FOG Cup.

A FOG Cup is not the kind that makes it hard to see while driving, but the kind that can help with home’s plumbing and major concerns with the City’s sewer system.

Fats, oils and grease (FOG) poured down your sink drain or in your toilet builds up on sewer walls causing blockages in the sewer system and blockages can lead to basement flooding. The City of Windsor spends a significant amount of money removing FOG from blocked sewers and in treatment costs at the wastewater treatment plants.

The City’s Environmental Department is asking residents to do their part to help save their sewers by using a FOG Cup. All you have to do is pour cooled kitchen fats, oil and grease into the FOG Cup and store it in your refrigerator or freezer until full and ready for disposal. Full cups can be put into the garbage or taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Public Drop-off Depot. By using a degradable cup, the impact on our landfill is reduced. The cups are also compatible with the processes used by grease recycling companies.

The City of Windsor will be distributing the cups at various events across the City including Devonshire Mall (April 16) and Earth Day at Malden Park (April 24). The cups are also available at the Household Hazardous Waste Public Drop-Off Depot (3560 North Service Road). The City of Windsor’s sewer maintenance crews may also distribute directly to your neighbourhood if they notice FOG in the sewer system.
